How long have you been involved in athletics?
I’ve been involved in athletics for just over a year now. I joined Moycarkey Coolcroo AC to try something new and quickly discovered a passion for running and being part of a club. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
What is your favorite event or discipline?
My favourite event would have to be the 10km. I really enjoy the balance of endurance and pace it requires—it’s long enough to test you, but short enough to push hard from the start.
What is your greatest achievement in athletics so far?
My biggest highlight to date has been breaking the 20-minute barrier in the Rathfarnham 5K. It was one of those moments where the hard work paid off, and it gave me a real sense of progress in my training.
Who is your biggest inspiration in the sport?
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is without a doubt my biggest inspiration. Watching his dominance on the track, especially at such a young age, is incredibly motivating. He’s the best I’ve seen in my lifetime.
What motivates you to keep training and competing?
Having a race lined up is always a great motivator for me. It gives purpose to each training session. I also get huge encouragement from the camaraderie of my teammates and training partners—we spur each other on.
What does a typical training week look like for you?
My weekly training is steady and balanced. I run around 40 to 50 kilometres a week, mixing endurance runs with some speed work. It’s a manageable load that allows for consistent progress without risking injury.
How do you prepare mentally before a big competition?
I try to stay as relaxed and focused as possible. I remind myself to trust the process and the training that’s brought me to that point. If I’ve put in the work, then I know I’ll be ready on race day.
What’s your most memorable moment in your athletics career?
It would have to be running a personal best at the County Senior 10K in Dundrum. The whole day was special—not just for me, but for the entire club. It was an incredible atmosphere and a historic result.
What do you do outside of athletics (e.g., job, hobbies)?
I work full-time, and outside of that I enjoy chilling out with friends, watching other sports, and going for walks. Running is a big part of my routine, but I also enjoy winding down when I can.
What is your favorite food or pre-race meal / or routine?
If I’m racing in the morning, I like to keep things simple—a bagel with jam and a mug of tea usually does the trick. For evening races, I go with a good pasta dish to keep the energy up.
Do you have a favorite brand of running shoes or gear?
I’m a big fan of the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 racing shoes. They’re incredibly comfortable and offer great support for hard efforts or long races.
What’s your advice for someone just starting in athletics?
Take it easy at the beginning—don’t expect miracles overnight. It’s all about consistency and patience. Trust the process and enjoy the journey—Rome wasn’t built in a day!
What’s your go-to recovery routine after training or races?
Recovery for me includes getting plenty of protein and electrolytes into the system, followed by some proper rest. I try not to overthink it—just listen to the body and take it easy.
How do you stay focused during long or tough training sessions?
Training with others makes all the difference. When you’re surrounded by good people who push and encourage you, those tough sessions become a lot more manageable—and even enjoyable.
What are your goals for the upcoming season or future in athletics?
One of my main goals is to complete my first half marathon at the Limerick race. I’m also focused on contributing to the club in any way I can, whether it’s through team events or helping newer members find their stride.
