How long have you been involved in athletics?
I’ve been involved in athletics since mid-2021 after making the switch from the GAA pitch. It started as something new to try, but I quickly got hooked on the training, racing, and the challenge of pushing myself over longer distances.
What is your favorite event or discipline?
I love the fast-paced 5K races during the summer months, but I also get great satisfaction from the long grind of a marathon training block. The contrast between the two keeps things interesting.
What is your greatest achievement in athletics so far?
Winning the County Senior 10K title was a big one for me. It’s always special to get your name on a county championship roll of honour, and it made all the hard training sessions worthwhile.
Who is your biggest inspiration in the sport?
I really enjoy following Clayton Young, the US marathoner. He doesn’t just share the highs of the sport—he’s open about the struggles too. His work ethic is something I really admire.
What motivates you to keep training and competing?
Winning team medals for the club is a huge motivator. Athletics can be an individual sport, but there’s something special about being part of a team that competes for silverware. Chasing PBs also keeps me pushing forward.
What does a typical training week look like for you?
Right now, I’m clocking 95 to 100 miles a week, with two structured sessions and a long run on Sunday. It’s a lot of mileage, but it’s what’s needed for marathon training.
How do you prepare mentally before a big competition?
I like to keep things simple—lying down, listening to some country music, and staying as relaxed as possible before the race.
What’s your most memorable moment in your athletics career?
Winning the County Novice in 2022 stands out. It was my first-ever race win, and you never forget that feeling of breaking the tape for the first time.
What do you do outside of athletics (e.g., job, hobbies)?
I work a 9-to-5 job and fit my running around that. Outside of training, I enjoy going to concerts and watching a bit of hurling whenever I get the chance.
What is your favorite food or pre-race meal / or routine?
On race mornings, my go-to is a coffee and some pastries. It might not be the textbook nutrition plan, but it works for me!
Do you have a favorite brand of running shoes or gear?
At the moment, I’m a fan of Asics, but for racing, I like the Nike Alphafly. They just give you that extra edge on race day.
What’s your advice for someone just starting in athletics?
Don’t compare your training to anyone else’s. Focus on yourself, trust the process, and commit to gradual progression—improvement takes time, but it will come.
What’s your go-to recovery routine after training or races?
A trip to the Horse and Jockey swimming pool is my favourite way to recover. Nothing beats a good soak after a tough session.
How do you stay focused during long or tough training sessions?
I try to stay relaxed, focus on my breathing, and maintain a consistent stride. Keeping my mind in the moment helps me push through the tougher runs.
What are your goals for the upcoming season or future in athletics?
I’m targeting the London Marathon in April and the Dublin Marathon in October. On the club side, I’d love to help us bring home a trophy on the road racing scene this year.
